Fishing

» Jacob Wheeler of Harrison and Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tennessee, finished first and second Friday in Group B after Dayton's Michael Neal was second in Group A in Major League Fishing's Bass Pro Tour event this week in Wisconsin. Neal caught a field-most 63 fish totaling 85 pounds, 3 ounces his two days on Lake Winnebago. New Jersey resident Mike Iaconelli leads the Group A top 20 into Saturday's Stage Eight knockout round on Lake Butte des Morts with 98-1 (61 fish), and Kevin VanDam of Michigan is third at 85-2 (58). Wheeler led Group B the first day at 51-4 (33) and wound up at 84-15 (55), while Morgan climbed five spots Friday to a total of 74-13 (45). Wesley Strader of Spring City, Tennessee, ended 11th in B at 62-11 (42). The 40 going out Saturday will start at zero, and the resulting top 10 will fish Green Lake for the championship on Sunday. The MLF's Bass Pro Tour does not have daily limits; the fish are returned immediately to the water after their weights are registered electronically in the anglers' boats for all to see on Scoretracker. Neal and Wheeler are third and fifth in the season points standings.

» Hensley Powell of Whitwell, Tennessee, moved up two spots to fourth Friday with a five-bass limit totaling 18 pounds, 4 ounces in the FLW Tour on Lake Champlain in New York. That gave him a two-day total of 38-2, just 10 ounces out of second place. Tyler Stewart of West Monroe, Louisiana, stayed in first at 40-1. The top 30 continue today in the semifinal round, trying to make the 10-angler final for Sunday. Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, slipped to 52nd Friday at 31-15 and received $9,500.

A four-year starter for Howe, Washington finished with 1,531 points and 528 assists, and as a senior he averaged 17.8 points, 5.2 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals a game. "He should be an immediate contributor in our program this coming year."
