Area sports notes: Tennessee Wesleyan wins in NAIA men's tennis nationals

Tennessee Wesleyan opened play Tuesday morning in the NAIA men's tennis national tournament in Mobile, Alabama, with an 8-1 defeat of No. 23 seed McPherson College. Calus Blomqyist with Ryan Lee and Caio Bardauil with Jhoann Osorio won in doubles and Bardauil, Blomqyist, Francisco Lanusse, Jorge Sedeno, Gregorio Magnarelli and Bernat Paredes won in singles for the 11th-seeded Bulldogs, who face sixth seed Middle Georgia State at 10 EDT this morning.

 

Baseball

* Tennessee Wesleyan lost 1-0 to Webber International on Tuesday but plays again at 11 this morning in the Kingsport Bracket of the NAIA baseball playoffs, while Bryan College's season ended with the Lions' second one-run loss of the Miami Gardens Bracket. This one was 11-10 to Thomas, which climbed out of a 9-0 hole. The Lions (36-17), who scored seven runs in the sixth inning, still led 10-3 in the eighth but gave up two runs with the help of two errors in the bottom half and then allowed six scores in the ninth. For the second straight day Lake Burris hit a three-run home run and a double for Bryan, cementing his single-season school record for homers at 29. The Lions' Marcus Catalano was 2-for-3 and scored three runs, Tucker Cain was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, Wade Weinburger had two RBIs and Parker Cosby was 2-for-4 with an RBI. For Wesleyan (49-9), the top seed at Kingsport, Cole Bellair pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts, but Marcus Begg and Quirino Esquivel each had two hits for No. 2 seed Webber (38-20) and Esquivel had the RBI after Begg's two-out single and a walk in the first inning.

 

Track & Field

* The NCAA revealed Tuesday that seven Lee University athletes are accepted in seven events into the Division II outdoor track and field national meet May 23-25 at Kingsville, Texas, led by the No. 3-seeded men's 4x400 relay team of Justin Brooks, Jeremiah McCain, Siphosethu Boya and Josiah Brooks. They set their automatic qualifying time and a Flames record of 3:08.42 at the Mount Olive Final Qualifier this past Sunday. The Brooks twins also are set for the 200-meter dash, Justin for the 100 and Josiah for the triple jump. Lee's other national participants are Christian Noble in the men's 3000 steeplechase, Charlee Boxall in the women's 1500 and Chloe Flora in the women's 5000. Also at the Mount Olive meet, Amber Littlejohn set a Lee women's record in the 400 dash and was part of another program record in the 4x100 relay.
