Area sports notes: Ryan Montgomery scores 30 points in Lee men's basketball team's overtime win

Lee University swept visiting Union University in a Gulf South Conference basketball doubleheader Saturday, 71-67 for the fifth-ranked Lady Flames and 76-72 in overtime for the Lee men. Camryn Grant had 18 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Flames (13-1, 5-1), who led 20th-ranked Union (11-3, 5-1) by 17 points late in the first half but by only four at the break. The Bulldogs never caught up, though; they were led by Jada Smith and Jacie Higgins with 14 points each, with Smith adding seven rebounds and four assists. Haley Schubert had 12 points and four assists and Abby Bertram provided six assists and seven rebounds for Lee. In the men's game, Ryan Montgomery had 30 points and 12 rebounds for the Flames (10-3, 5-1), and Quay Kennedy had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kentrell Evans scored 12 points. LiDonta Hicks-Gentry led Union (9-5, 3-3) with 19 points and 16 rebounds. The Bulldogs led 57-51 with 7:23 left in the second half, but Lee went ahead at 5:14 on Montgomery free throws, and he gave them a 66-62 edge at 0:35. Union's Tyree Boykin hit two free throws and a shot in the lane in the last 24 seconds, sending the game to overtime. Neither team had more than a two-point margin in the extra period until the final 12 seconds, when Kennedy made a free throw and a layup. Union's last score tied the game with 1:51 to go, and Montgomery hit a go-ahead free throw 12 seconds later.

* The Covenant College basketball teams both won USA South home games Saturday, the Lady Scots by 61-50 over winless Wesleyan (Georgia) and the Covenant men by 71-66 over Pfeiffer. Chris Barnette led the Scots (6-4, 3-0) with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Will Crumly had 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting plus eight rebounds. Noah Oetjen added nine points with six rebounds. Jamaal David led Pfeiffer (6-5, 1-2) with 17 points and five steals. For the Lady Scots (5-7, 2-1), Rachel Thomas had 15 points, 11 rebounds and four steals; Hannah Monday contributed 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots; and Ruthie Moore countered 10 turnovers with nine steals, nine assists and six rebounds. Margo Koby had 11 points, five assists and four thefts.

* The Dalton State College men, ranked 19th in NAIA Division I, improved to 13-1 overall and 3-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference by winning 82-69 Saturday at Brewton-Parker. That was the Roadrunners' 12th consecutive win over the Barons, going back to Feb. 5, 2015. Randy Bell paced DSC with 18 points, while Dauson Womack added 13, Kevon Tucker 12 and Aaron Burress and Sean Cranney 11 apiece, Cranney also passed for 10 assists, and Burress and Tucker shared the team high of seven rebounds.

* The Bryan College men avenged an early-November loss at St. Andrews with an 83-66 defeat of the Knights in Saturday's Appalachian Athletic Conference game in Dayton. AJ Jones led six double-digit scorers for the Lions (8-7, 7-4) with 16 points and seven assists, while Justin Warner had 12 points and seven rebounds, Michael Cody and Noah Mulaski each 12 points also, Brandon Thomas 11 plus four assists and Gavin Wilson 10 points. Isaac Clay scored 21 for St. Andrews (3-11, 3-8), which trailed 46-29 at halftime.

* Kaitlyn Strange made four of six 3-point shots and scored 14 points, and Hannah Troutt and Carlie Runyan added 13 apiece plus 10 and seven rebounds as the Tennessee Wesleyan University women rolled to a 79-52 AAC victory at Brenau. Troutt was 3-of-4 on 3s. Savannah Atkins scored 11 points for TWU (6-7, 6-4), which swelled a 40-30 halftime margin with a 24-11 third quarter. Alyson Crowder's 10 points had led the NAIA Division II Lady Bulldogs in their 73-47 exhibition loss Thursday at NCAA Division II member Alabama-Huntsville, which got 22 points and nine rebounds from Signal Mountain's Aryn Sanders. Sanders, a senior, is averaging team highs of 15 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.8 steals a game for the Chargers (6-6). Dominique Oggs had 20 points and three steals in the TWU men's 76-64 exhibition loss at UAH (12-2).

* Cleveland State ended its long holiday break Saturday with a 96-60 women's rout of visiting Gadsden State, but the Gadsden men won 81-65 and now are 12-3. The Lady Cougars (8-5) had five double-figure scorers, led by Asjah Harrell with a career-high 32 points and six assists and Britnay Gore with 25 points and 17 rebounds. Charisma Barner scored 15 points, and Cassidy Nihoff and Kaitlyn Goodman added 11 each. For the Cougars (5-8), Demonte Person scored 23 and Jaquez Hicks had 10 plus 10 rebounds.
