Area college softball roundup: Mocs lose by a run twice

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team dropped to 1-3 in the Clearwater tournament in Florida with two more one-run losses Saturday, 3-2 to Yale and 5-4 to Bowling Green.

Yale won on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Mocs (6-13) have lost six of their past seven games, each by a single run.

Emma Sturdivant hit a two-run home in the third inning against Yale for UTC, scoring Aly Walker, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI single and an RBI double against Bowling Green (10-6). Emily Coltharp and Hayleigh Weissenbach each had two hits and two runs in that game, and Kendall Andrews was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Chattanooga State 8-3, Motlow State 0-1: At Chattanooga, Brooke Parrott pitched a six-inning five-hit shutout and Lauren Gillespie followed with a 13-strikeout four-hitter as the Lady Tigers rose to 5-1 in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association with another doubleheader against Motlow set for Sunday.

Haley Smith and Madison Morris homered and Sarah Wilson was 3-for-3 with an RBI in the first game, when Breanna Vinson was 2-for-4 and scored twice and Sydney White and Mabry Carpenter tripled, batting in two runs and one. Vinson was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and a run scored in game two.

Cleveland State 6-6, Roane State 4-1: At Cleveland, the Lady Cougars swept the Lady Raiders in TCCAA play for the second day in a row as Kristen Sharp hit a two-run home run in the opener and Hannah Turner, Amber Atkins and Kat Cechini cleared the fence in the finale. Atkins had three RBIs.

Sharp, Turner, Kati Kennedy and Haley Fair had multiple hits in game one, and Anna Yell was 2-for-4 in the rematch. Kaylee Cornelius got the save in the first game and pitched the first five innings for the win in game two.

Valdosta State 3-5, Lee 2-3: At Valdosta, Georgia, the nationally ranked Blazers pulled out two close Gulf South Conference wins, the second on a walk-off two-run homer after Lee lost a 3-0 first-inning lead. Lulu Vasquez gave up that homer in relief after taking a tough loss on a six-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Lee scored both of its first-game runs on Maddie Davenport's sixth-inning single following hits by Kayla Gooch and Kayla Louie.
