Fresh off a dominant second Tennessee Girls' Junior Amateur victory in a row, Ashley Gilliam of Manchester got in plenty of golf Thursday in the previously fog-plagued U.S. Girls' Junior at Pebble Beach in California. After the round of 64 in match play was suspended Wednesday night with the 46th-seeded Gilliam among those yet to start, she won 3 and 1 over No. 19 Ashely Shim from San Mateo, California, and 6 and 4 over Mychael O'Berry of Hoover, Alabama, and was 2 up through eight holes on No. 3 seed Brooke Seay of Rancho Santa Fe, California, when play was suspended for the night in the round of 16. Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, North Carolina, who has grandparents in Red Bank, tied for 36th in qualifying and was seeded 43rd. In the last round-of-64 match to begin, No. 22 Yukino Yoshihira of Irvine, California, edged Adam 1 up on the Poppy Hills course.

Tennis

' No. 4 seed Nikolay Nikiforov became the first men's open singles quarterfinalist in the 2018 City Championships at Manker Patten Tennis Club with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Charles Jabaley. The other round-of-16 matches setting up Friday's 7 p.m. quarterfinals are scheduled for 2. Lucas Plesky, Turner Voges and Luke Plaisted are seeded first through third. Hayley Carter and Drew Hawkins are the top two seeds in women's singles, with quarterfinals at 4 p.m. Friday. Kayla Kelly won a match and has a bye into the semifinals.

Fishing

' Nathan Bell and Cole Sands led Bryan College's six boats in the Carhartt Bassmaster college nationals on Tenkiller Lake in Oklahoma with an 18th-place start Thursday of 7 pounds, 14 ounces. Garrett Enders and Cody Huff of Bryan fishing rival Bethel in McKenzie, Tennessee, took the lead with 16-10, and another Bethel pair was third. Bryan's Thad Simerly and Ethan Shaw were 44th out of 136 boats with 4-8, and the other four Bryan boats were among the 48 that failed to weigh a fish. Tenkiller has a 16-inch minimum for bass. The top dozen after Friday's round go back on the lake Saturday.

General

' A celebration of life for Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame inductee and board member Fred Carter Jr. will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Old Lee Highway, and visitation with the family is set there for 5-8 p.m. Friday and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Carter, a 1957 all-state basketball player at City High School who continued his career at the University of Chattanooga, died Tuesday morning at the age of 79.
