Law wins state's super senior title and other sports news

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Chattanooga's Ronnie Law completed a wire-to-wire triumph in the super senior division of the 42nd annual Tennessee Senior Amateur golf tournament with a 77 Friday at Blackthorn Club. That left him at 218 for 54 holes, two strokes ahead of runner-up Mike Nixon of Nashville. Signal Mountain's John Felker tied for sixth at 231 with a closing 74. Law led by three after a first-round 70 and by five after Thursday's play. Danny Green of Jackson won the main senior division with a 212 after a closing 73. Afton's Tim Dinwiddie was second at 213. Randall Yoder tied for sixth at 220, and fellow Chattanoogan Neil Spitalny was 10th at 222. Tom Baird of Signal Mountain and Larry McGill of Chattanooga tied for 14th and 16th, respectively, at 226 and 228.

Volleyball

• Senior Heather Parman had nine kills and Bridget Camacho set 27 assists as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga opened its 2012 volleyball season Friday night by defeating Alcorn State 25-3, 25-12, 25-12 in UTC's Country Inns & Suites Invitational tournament at Maclellan Gymnasium. Christina Teter recorded seven kills and Sarah Batterton and Julimar Alvarado added six apiece for the Mocs, while Paula Passmore led with 11 digs and Kasey Talley served four aces.

• CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Lee University volleyball team, rebuilding but ranked third in the NAIA, opened its season in the Lee Invitational tournament Friday and lost 3-2 to Indiana Wesleyan before beating Xavier (La.) 3-0. Junior middle blocker Irene Ojukwu had 16 kills with a .667 attack percentage and Marija Zelenovic added 13 kills in the 25-14, 25-16, 25-16 win for the Lady Flames, when freshman Nicole Sumida added nine kills on .636 hitting and Paula Martins and Becky Bourne each had 21 assists. Ojukwu had 20 kills and 16 digs and Zelenovic had 16 and nine in the 25-22, 21-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13 loss to IWU, which had beat Olivet Nazarene 3-1. Libby Peigen added 20 digs and Sarah Davis made 11, and Camil Martinez had 52 assists and six kills. Alijah Mulitauppele led four IWU players with double-digit kills with 17, while Yui Iwase had 49 assists and 12 digs and Rebecca Brandes made 20 digs and Rae Brandes had 17 digs with 12 kills.

• MONTREAT, N.C. - Bryan College, picked to finish second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, opened its volleyball season Friday with a 3-1 win over Southern Wesleyan and a 25-23, 28-26, 12-25, 18-25, 16-14 loss to the hosts in Montreat's tournament. Makenzie Sindelar had 18 kills and Chelsea Breaden and Maggie Brown added 15 and 11 against Montreat, when Taylor Fink had 32 assists, Rebecca Adams had 18 digs and Kaylan Dilts had four solo blocks and two block assists. The Lady Lions finished 20-19 and tied for second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference last fall and were picked to finish second again in David Shumaker's second season as coach. Junior libero Corrie Fink made the All-AAC second team last year. Freshman outside hitters Lindsey Knight from Florida and Ashley Mattoch from South Carolina are expected to provide help this season.

• Tennessee Temple University plays its first volleyball matches under coach Latonia Allen today in a tournament at Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga. Last year's team went 12-22. Top players include junior setter Natasha Ferreti, junior middle hitter Rachel Binkley, junior outside hitter Kortney Chapman, senior outside hitter P.J. Sexton, sophomore middle hitter Shatoya Medford and junior right side hitter Coya Gardner. "The girls have worked extremely hard in preseason and in less than two weeks have shown great improvement," Allen said. "Our coaching staff feels excited about the progress we have made in such a short time."

Soccer

• The Bryan College men's soccer team opens its first season in 23 years without Sandy Zensen as the coach by hosting Truett-McConnell tonight at 7:30. The Lions were 12-7-2 last year and reached the AAC tournament final after a fourth-place season finish, and they were picked fourth for 2012 with returners led by Richard Kirk, a first-team all-conference player in 2011, at center back and fellow seniors and past All-AAC second- and third-teamers Johannes Muller and Tom Hemmings in the midfield. Junior forward/center midfielder Nate Adams, who redshirted last year due to injury, and freshman outside midfielder Miles Christian from Bradley Central should add strength. "We are excited about the group we have this year, and we have had a good training camp," said Joey Johnson, a former Bryan star who succeeded Zensen, who still is the athletic director. "I have tremendous respect and appreciation for Coach Zensen and the foundation that he has laid here."

• The Bryan women's soccer team also begins its season today, but on the road at Pikeville in Kentucky. Mark Sauve's Lady Lions were 4-14-3 in 2011 and picked to finish seventh in the AAC in 2012. They return junior All-AAC first-teamer Stephanie Gagnon in goal and two other past all-conference second- and third-team picks in senior center back Lauren Bolling, who was hurt last year, and senior defensive midfielder Kaity Bryant. Carson-Newman transfers Emily Lambert up front and Haley Julian at center mid are key newcomers. "We have a solid team this year, and we expect to compete in every match," Sauve said.
