Signal sweeps in singles

Not long after securing the 2010 Class A/AA state singles championship, Notre Dame's John Dorris decided to attempt to do the same thing in doubles this year with teammate and good friend Nick Wurm.

With a district doubles title in 2009, Signal Mountain senior Danielle Linhart chose to try to add a singles title to her resume.

Both decisions seem to have been good ones.

Dorris and Wurm cruised to the District 7-A/AA title Tuesday at the Champions Club, while Linhart claimed the girls' singles championship after a runner-up finish last year by defeating Notre Dame freshman Danika Dorris.

Signal Mountain swept the singles titles, with Luke Wolfe winning the boys' bracket. Notre Dame's Katie Joyce and Callie Voges repeated their doubles title with a win over Chattanooga Christian's Ellie Henry and Gretchen Rowe.

Irish coach Anne Ricksecker said Dorris's decision not to defend his state title wasn't a surprise.

"That's just the kind of guy he is," she said. "I'm perfectly fine with it; they started talking about doing this right after last season was over with."

Signal Mountain coach Keith Dressler was pleased to have a pair of champions.

"It's a big win for these kids, but also a big win for our program," Dressler said. "It's real big for us to have two champs."

Continuing their dominance this year, the Arts & Sciences boys claimed both the singles and doubles titles in the District 6-A/AA tournament at Standifer Gap Park.

Jackson Lenoir was the winner in the singles tournament, while Andrew Ball and Ian Derthick won in doubles.

Red Bank's Katie Lawson won the girls' singles championship, while East Hamilton's Taylor Johnson and Hilleary Chandler were the doubles champions.
