Boyd Buchanan soccer duo of Hayes Wood, Seth Highfield tough to contain

While neither Hayes Wood nor Seth Highfield tries to play a superhero role every time he touches the ball, the two Boyd Buchanan attackers could be viewed as a Batman and Robin type of combo.

With a strong understanding of one another's strengths, Wood and Highfield have combined for 18 goals through the first eight matches of the season.

"I could care less about scoring. As long as our team wins I am happy," Wood after the senior registered a hat trick in a 6-0 home victory over Collegedale Academy on Monday night. "I trust everyone on this team. I know any time I can get the ball to Seth he has a chance to do something special. He can blow past anybody on the field."

As a high-energy type player, Highfield is ready to strike at any moment. Whether pressuring the back line of the defense for a steal to create quick offense or cutting a trail around or through multiple defenders, the junior keeps opponents worrying about where he is.

Highfield scored four goals against Grace Academy earlier this season.

"The key is to stay focused," Highfield said. "You can't get off your game at any point. Our motivation is to push through the entire season and make it to the last game of the state tournament. Every day my coaches push me to be better."

The Buccaneers (5-1-2) have reached the Division II-A state semifinals the past two seasons, while the memories for coach Dustin Walker and a few others still remain from a 2010 state championship run.

"We have had a lot of talented players throughout the years," said Walker, who took over the program in 2004. "Seth and Hayes really help push this team. They are two extremely talented players who we are lucky to have leading the charge."

Boyd Buchanan has a senior class of four, which also includes Daniel Ingram, Patrick Parker and Luke Terrell. Ingram's second-half goal against St. Andrew's-Sewanee helped his side climb back from a two-goal halftime deficit to win 3-2.

Captains Adrian Oyler and Easton King have helped provide a lockdown presence on defense with the versatile Ben Hauke, while Sam Bruner and Tyson Campbell add dangerous threats to opposing keepers.

Bruner drilled a powerful score against Collegedale, while Highfield opened the rout with a score off a pass from Wood and also assisted Ingram, who won a battle in the air to find the back net.

"Everybody who takes the field for us is strong," said Wood, who will play at Lipscomb University. "Every match we need to go out there and play as hard as we can. Everything works out when we all work together and are tough."
