Signal Mountain basketball standout Lamiah Walker hopes to use a Division I athletic scholarship to help propel her to career goals beyond the court.

Walker, a versatile guard who averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists per game for the Lady Eagles as a junior this past season, announced her commitment to Austin Peay State University on Saturday afternoon via Twitter.

"Academically I will be able to pursue my pre-health professional degree to become a dentist," Walker told The Times Free Press. "Austin Peay had a great season this year, and their system will allow my versatility as a player to shine through. The love and support there is unmatched."

The Signal Mountain girls tied the program record for wins with 25 in 2019-20, and they return their top three scorers from that team. Walker showed progress in leadership and basketball skills during the season, and she hopes to make an impact as soon as she joins the Ohio Valley Conference's Lady Governors, whose 18-12 record this past season was their best since going 23-7 in 2003-04.

Walker's older sister Lennex is already a standout student-athlete at the Clarksville school as a member of the track and field team. She will be a senior in 2020-21.

"Lennex has been such an influential part of my life and has given me a blueprint to follow with all of her accomplishments," Walker said. "She has really worked hard in the classroom and athletics."

Lennex, who was a prep star at Arts & Sciences, has won three individual OVC championships and this year helped the Lady Govs win the league's indoor championship for the first time since 2001.

"I have been there to witness her be a part of something so special," Walker said. "I am inspired by my sister, and I want to do the same and help create history at APSU."
