After leading all TSSAA Division II bowlers in regular-season scoring average, Notre Dame junior CJ Petrin was first again after the state individual semifinals Thursday at Smyrna, but he finished second Friday to Pope John Paul II junior Matthew Mesecher. McCallie junior Andrew Haun wound up fourth.

Notre Dame (22-1) is in the Division II boys' team semifinals Saturday morning at 10 EST after beating Lipscomb Academy 21-6 on Friday afternoon. Petrin rolled a 640 series and Carson Barasha had a 599 for the Irish (22-1), who take on St. Benedict (11-4).

McCallie (10-6) lost 22-5 to Christian Brothers (14-1), and GPS (11-2) and the Baylor girls (10-3) fell 20-7 and 22-5, respectively, to PJP (10-1) and St. Benedict (12-0). Tullahoma lost 17-10 to Lebanon in the Division I boys' quarterfinals.

Petrin's 213.3 game average through the individual semifinals was 15 pins clear of second-place Mesecher and left him needing just one win in the six-man ladder finals to be the D-II state champion, but Mesecher edged him 177-174. Haun (187.3) started the ladder from the sixth position and won 182-137 over No. 5 Riley Martin from St. Benedict and 186-150 over Briarcrest's Jack Hollis III before falling 208-166 to No. 3 Tony Craig of Christian Brothers.

No area boy or girl made the other three finals, but Allie Foropoulos from GPS finished seventh in D-II girls at 153.3, and Walker Valley's Jacob Brown (188.1) and Rhea County's Phillip Rogers (185.8) were eighth and ninth in Division I boys.

In a separate "unified" short-match invitational bracket, East Hamilton is bowling against Bartlett while Soddy-Daisy faces Franklin in quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. EST Saturday.
