Prep roundup: Ringgold holds off late Sonoraville rally

Ringgold's baseball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three inning, then held off a late Sonoraville rally to claim a 9-8 Region 6-AAA win.

The Phoenix scored four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning before falling short. Eli Norris had a pair of doubles among his three hits and drove in five runs for the Tigers (8-5, 3-0), with Dre Morris and Sam Mills adding two hits and McCain Mangum a solo home run.

Jaxon Pate was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Zevyn Furgeson drove in two runs and Tanner Folds hit a solo homer for Sonoraville (6-6, 1-2).

BASEBALL

Rome 9, Dalton 0: Hayden Filletti pitched a 12-strikeout, two-hit shutout for the Wolves in the Region 5-AAAAAA game, with Jonathan Vigoa knocking in three runs on a pair of hits. Caleb Nix had both of Dalton's hits.

McMinn County 4, Ooltewah 3: The Cherokees landed a walk-off District 5-AAA victory as a wild pick-off attempt to first base sent Jayden Miller sprinting around the bases and scoring after a wild throw to third base. McMinn County stole nine bases led by Gavin Peterson who swiped four, while Andrew Ronne struck out eight over five innings of one-hit pitching. Ooltewah's Noah Huling tied the game in the top of the seventh with a two-run double.

Sequatchie County 10, Whitwell 2: Senior shortstop Griffin Hall had three hits and drove in a pair of runs along with Logan Potts. Blake Henry and Sergio Camp combined for 13 strikeouts. Dakota Morrison drove in both runs for the Tigers.

Sale Creek 3, Arts & Sciences 2: Braden Penny struck out 15, allowing just three hits and no earned runs in the win. Jacob Elrod was 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBIs for the Panthers.

SOFTBALL

Ooltewah 12, Arts & Sciences 0: Jaycee Holt and Zoe Cates led the Lady Owls offense with two hits apiece, while Annalee Moore and Zoe Cates combined for seven strikeouts over three innings.

Central 5, Grace Academy 3: Chrissy Appling drove in two runs, while Mischa Johnson and Ashlyn Wood each had two hits for the Lady Purple Pounders. Grace's Miriam Ateca, Anna Rush and Ella Taylor Waldron all went 2-for-4. Calli Morgan earned the victory.

Boyd Buchanan 10, Hixson 0: Presley Williamson homered and doubled while Brooke Watson had three hits and three RBIs for the Lady Buccaneers. Gracie Petty also doubled twice and drove in two runs. Kiley Elliott allowed four hits over six shutout innings and struck out 11.

Red Bank 8, Silverdale Baptist 1: Lexie Wright went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run on her way to driving in three runs. Bailee Phillips threw a gem striking out nine batters and only allowing four hits over seven innings while also going 2-for-3 with a double.

TENNIS

GPS shut out Darlington (Ga.), 5-0, on the road. Mary Kate Johnson was sharp in singles play while Ava and Olivia Scotchie and Erin Ensign and Madison Arden were dominant in doubles play.
