Southeast Whitfield scored twice in the second period of overtime to stun Northwest Whitfield 3-2 Friday night in Tunnel Hill, winning the GHSA Region 7-AAAA boys' soccer championship and earning the region's top seed heading into the upcoming state playoffs.
The visiting Raiders (14-2-3, 6-0), the reigning Class AAAA state champions, tied the game at 2 with less than five minutes left in the second period of overtime off a Jerry Favela corner kick, with Angel Garcia heading it home. Two minutes later, Leo Barajas, off a crossing free kick from Nathan Villanueva, scored the goal that held up as the winner.
"My guys never quit," Southeast coach Hector Holguin said. "We aren't special or super talented, but we never, ever quit. Our guys will begin practice, run 20 40-yard hill sprints and go straight into a 20-minute scrimmage. We practice in a rough environment so that we can play in any type of environment.
"That's why I felt fine despite being down 2-1 late in overtime. I knew my guys would score - they just always find a way."
The game was scoreless at halftime, but the Bruins (11-4-1, 5-1) got the game's first goal on a Hayden Adams header. Villanueva put one past Northwest keeper Jose Mendiola to tie it with 25 minutes to play. Each team missed on good scoring chances late to send the game into overtime.
BASEBALL
Sequatchie County 15, South Pittsburg 13: Baron Cribbs knocked in five runs and the Indians stole seven bases on the way to victory. Anthony Wright had four RBIs and Tayven Boston had three hits and two RBIs as Sequatchie County broke through by scoring four runs to take the lead in the top of the seventh. South Pittsburg's Jayden Mount and Luke Rector each had a trio of hits and RBIs.
Sale Creek 9, Whitwell 0: Four pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout and the Panthers had four extra-base hits. Justin Griffin went 2-for-2 with a triple while scoring and driving in a pair of runs, and Gavin McGlocklin and Javan O'Kelley each drove in two.
Bradley Central 5, Polk County 3: Memphis Flowers singled in the bottom of the sixth and stole second and third before scoring the go-ahead run. Bradley Central scored three runs in the inning, and Alex Brew picked up the win with six strikeouts in three innings. Polk County's Jake White allowed three hits in six innings and struck out seven batters while giving up no earned runs.
Lookout Valley 2, Red Bank 1: Christian Chandler and Jacob Rollins each had two hits and the Yellow Jackets scored both runs in the first two innings, while Rylan Collins allowed one hit in seven innings and struck out seven batters for the win. Red Bank's Aiden Porter also went the distance, throwing 57 of his 79 pitches for strikes.
Gordon Lee 8, Central 0: In the Central Invitational, Bo Rhudy had two hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs to lead the Trojans (9-8). Garrett Ramey was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Gordon Lee.
Rockmart 7, Ringgold 6: Rockmart (13-5, 8-1) won a battle of first-place teams in GHSA Region 6-AAA by taking advantage of eight errors by Ringgold (10-10, 7-2), which led to five unearned runs. Sam Crew and Ross Norman had two hits each for the Tigers, with Sebastian Haggard adding two RBIs.
LFO 5, Sonoraville 4: Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (11-7, 5-2 Region 6-AA) rallied from three runs down by scoring one in the fifth and two in the sixth to edge the Phoenix (11-7, 6-3). Will Carroll, who was 3-for-3, and Tanner Mantooth had RBIs in the inning. Dylan Blankenship earned the win after allowing two hits in 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Coahulla Creek 6, Adairsville 4: Joey Estrada and Ryan Langford had RBI singles in the sixth to help lift the Colts (7-11, 4-5 Region 6-AAA) past Adairsville. Estrada had two hits and Bailey Stroud pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the win.
Calhoun 9-15, Cass 4-0: The Yellow Jackets (15-4, 5-2 Region 6-AAAAA), after losing the opener Thursday, earned the series win with a pair of dominant victories in Friday's doubleheader. Andon Lewis and Cooper Evans combined for four hits, each with a home run, and drove in five runs in game one. Evans and Brooks Crawford combined for four no-hit innings in game two with 10 strikeouts, and Evans and Jake Slaughter had two hits and three RBIs each.
Dade County 11, Chattooga 1: Brodie Swader pitched a five-inning one-hitter with nine strikeouts while also going 2-for-3, including a homer, and driving in three runs for the Wolverines (11-8, 3-5 Region 7-AA). Landon Williams was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Eli Kimball knocked in two runs for Dade.
Trion 11, Murray County 4: Linkin Farrar had a pair of hits and drove in four runs, with Kade Smith adding three RBIs for the Bulldogs (12-5) in a nonregion win.
SOFTBALL
Walker Valley 7, Sullivan East 4: Alexis Thornton tripled and scored twice, Sierra Brown and Madilyn Kidd drove in two runs and Hannah Guffey had two hits for the Lady Mustangs.
Sequatchie County 9, Ooltewah 5: Jalyn Kelly homered and scored two runs out of the No. 9 spot in the Lady Indians' lineup. Ooltewah's Kameron Hampton went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Alex Haynes and Alexis Poling each had two hits.
