Anne Ballard

Anne Mathes Ballard died on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012.She was born on Nov. 2, 1926.She married James Ewing Ballard Sr. on Feb. 9, 1952. They had five children. The third son, Stuart Mathes Ballard preceded her in death as did her husband.She is survived by the following children, grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her children are Olive Marr Ballard Durant (Daniel); their children are Evie Marr and Noel; James Ewing Ballard Jr. whose children are Catherine Lamar, James Ewing the III and Mathes; Fredrick Arthur Ballard (Mary Moon) and Abbie Louise Ballard Brooks (Jay) their children are Connor, Anna and Jay Jr.; her great-grandson, James Ewing Ballard IV. Anne is survived by a sister, Sarah Mathes Close; and three cousins, Joan Hays Williams, of Signal Mountain, Richard Austin Marr and Walter Marr, both who reside in Michigan. Anne is also survived by Jimmy Rhein a cousin who lives in Jonesborough, Tenn.Anne grew up on Signal Mountain as did her mother Olive Marr Mathes. Her father was Paul Stuart Mathes. He grew up in Jonesborough, Tenn., then later moved to Chattanooga. Anne was educated at Miss Greeta Werts School on Vine Street, Girls Preparatory School and her senior year she attended Ward-Belmont in Nashville. She attended all four years of college at Randolph Macon Womens College in Lynchburg, Va. She belonged to the Chi Omega sorority while attending college. In 1950 she had a wonderful trip to Europe. When she returned she became a Field Director for the Girl Scouts. She continued her Girl Scout work for over 25 years first as a professional then as a volunteer. She was a troop leader for both daughters.Anne was invited to be a member of the Chattanooga Junior League where she took a provisional course and was a life time member. Anne was a member of the Chattanooga Cotton Ball Board for over 25 years. She was presented as a belle, later her daughters were trainbearers. Anne did all types of volunteer service. She worked with the Red Cross for many years where she taught swimming, knitted and was a Grey Lady Volunteer. She loved gardening and arranging flowers. Anne was past president of The Garden Club of Signal Mountain 1978-1980. She was honored with a life membership in the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs for outstanding service.For just plain fun, Anne belonged to a group called the "Nifty No-Mads". This group of women traveled around the South East touring historical sites, visiting art museums, attending performances, etc. She also belonged to a Friday's book club. Her favorite pastime was playing bridge. She belonged to at least 6 groups of regular players. Anne loved antiques and shopping for them. She belonged to a group called Questers, the Falling Waters Chapter who studied old things and gave talks on them. Annes grandfather, Walter L. Marr realized Signal Mountain needed a church so he had one built and gave it to the community. Anne laid the papers in the corner stone of the Marr Memorial Chapel. She was given a life membership of the Signal Mountain Presbyterian Womens group as was her mother and grandmother. Anne resided at the Alexian Inn where she received communion in her room each Sunday by worshipers of St. Timothys Episcopal Church of which she is now a member.The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall at St. Timothys Episcopal Church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 23.The funeral will follow in the Nave at St. Timothys Episcopal Church, at 11 a.m. with Interim Priest John Dukes officiating.Interment will be at Chattanooga Memorial Park (duck pond) with only the family being present.In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga for the Mountain Arts Community Center; The Garden Club of Signal Mountain beautification program; Hosanna Community or St. Timothys Episcopal Church, Eucharistic Ministry Outreach Services.Please share your thoughts and memories at www.chattanooganorthchapel.com.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, TN 37343.
