Foster Mathes

Sr.Charles "Foster" Mathes Sr., 89, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, died on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, in a local hospital.He was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Central High School class of 1941 and retired from Standard Coosa-Thatcher Co. after more than 40 years of service. Foster received his bachelors degree from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1971. He served in the Army Air Force from 19421945.He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Virginia Mathes; his parents, Katie and Jay Mathes; and sisters, Gladys and Frances.He is survived by his son, Foster Mathes Jr. and wife, Lynn, of Orlando, Fla.; granddaughters, Heather Jenkinson and husband, John, of Knoxville, Allison Pierce and husband, Lee, of Ringgold, Ga.; great-grandsons, Alex Pierce and Benjamin Pierce, of Ringgold; and great-granddaughter Samantha Jenkinson, of Knoxville; sister-in-law Dottie Womack, of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist with Dr. Bill Owens officiating followed by burial in National Cemetery.
