Alfreda Smith

Alfreda Havis Hood Smith, 58, Magnolia, Miss., originally from Chattanooga, until going to the U.S. Army. She was a hardworker since the age of twelve. She worked different jobs during school years every summer including the Salvation Army, Chattanooga Health Department and babysitting. She had an after school job with McKenzie College where she attended before going into the Army. She served in Lawton, Okla., and then Heidelberg, Germany. She also worked a civilian job and took a Postal College course while serving in the Army. She met and married Ray Hood of Magnolia, Miss. She worked at the employment office temporarily then Sears for seven years and attended Nursing School at Southwest College. She graduated and worked at Sears and her nursing job at Beacham Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed nursing service. To the union with Roy Hood three children were born, twins, Melanie Hood of Fernwood, Miss., Erica Lee, of Magnolia, Miss., and Jessica Hood, of Magnolia, Miss.; grandchildren, Travon "Scooter Blue", Zavion "Za-Bee", MaKyah of Fernwood, Miss.; twin granddaughters, JaLayiah and JaNyira Lee, of Magnolia. She was a member of New Home Baptist Church in Magnolia, Miss. She attended, joined and baptized at New Enon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, C.L. Havis; grandmothers, Jessica Sowell; and one brother, Terry Hampton. She is survived by her mother, Ethel Guice; seven brothers, Edward, Lennell Hampton, Rodney and Jeffery Havis, of Tennessee, Willis and Milton Havis, of Alabama.; seven sisters, Brenda Fox, Diane Hampton (Sharon), of Chicago, Cassandra McElath (Eric), Sheila Havis Byrd (Kelley), Jean Phinizey, of Tennessee, Doris Chandler and Mozelle Brazelton of Alabama; one sister, Adrienne Bailey, of Atlanta. Military burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
