LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN — Stanley Ross Payne, M.D., passed away peacefully at home, family by his side, Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018. Stanley was born on Feb. 27, 1933, in Dallas, Texas. He was raised in San Antonio, graduating from Alamo Heights HS, followed by Tulane University and Tulane Medical School. Stanley was accepted into the Navy’s Flight Surgeon school in Pensacola, Fla. where he met his wife Mary, a school teacher, from Suttle, Ala. Married, they spent four years at the Naval Air Station outside of D.C., where Stanley was commissioned a Lieutenant. He then began his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minn. in orthopedics, and one year as a Fellow. Stanley and family then moved to Schenectady, N.Y., and San Francisco, as he studied various specialties of orthopedics. In 1969, Stanley and Mary moved to Lookout Mountain with their three young children, to begin his career as an orthopedic surgeon in Chattanooga, Tenn. Stanley loved his profession, his family, and the Lookout Mountain Presbyterian church. He greatly valued the Lookout Mountain community, that provided much love and support to his family over the years. His family is forever grateful for the loving care he also received in later years from his caregivers. Stanley loved hiking with his hiking buddies, tennis at the Fairyland Club, and sailing their catamaran at Pawley’s Island every summer. He loved investing and politics and never shied away from a heated debate of either. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Walter Payne. He is survived by his loyal wife of 60 years, Mary Suttle Payne, of Lookout Mountain; his daughter, Mary Catherine (Tom) Overby of Vienna, Va.; his son, Stanley Ross (Sally) Payne Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and Walter (Pam) Freeman Payne, of Denver, Colo.; and their eight grandchildren, Logan, Austin, Thomas, Freeman, Suttle, Fulton, Fuller, and Lucius.
