Joe Laymon

Mr. Joe Gaylon Laymon died peacefully on April 7, 2019, in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the age of 63. Joe Laymon is survived by his parents, Ernest Kurt and Ailene Laymon, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; his wife, Wilma Laymon; his children, Danielle Laymon, Harrianne Feria, Kelly Jo Leary (Shane), Michael Laymon (Emily), and Scarlett Dunn (Keith); his sister, Terri Neighbors (David); his grandchildren, Andrew, Annie, Benny, Caleb, Caroline, Ethan, Hannah, Luke, Preston, Remy, and Tanner. He was preceded in death by his Brother Michael Dwayne Laymon and sister, Rhonda Levi. Joe Laymon was born on Sept. 10, 1955, in Portsmouth, Va. He attended Soddy-Daisy High School and then enlisted into the Navy in 1974. He served his country from 1974 to 1996 where he retired at the rank of Boatswain’s Mate Chief Petty Officer. He served on the USS Capodanno, USS Talbot, USS Saratoga, and the USS Eisenhower. He was stationed at the Naval Station in New Orleans, La., Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL. He served with distinction earning many accolades and awards during his naval career. After retirement he served his country a second time by working as a Merchant Mariner for the Military Sea Lift Command. He retired from his life at sea when his health started to deteriorate and lost his life to throat cancer. Joe Laymon was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a ferocious patriot. He loved his family, he loved fishing, and he loved the sea. Farewell and following seas “Boats”. There will be a private service that will take place for family Thursday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, it is the family wish that donations be made to Hospice of Chattanooga and the American Cancer Society.
