Frances Walker

Frances Cannon Walker of Signal Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, at the age of 102 years old. She was born in Slayden, Tenn., on Aug. 5, 1917, to George D. Cannon and Maude Slayden Cannon.

Frances was married to her beloved husband, Robert (Bob) Walker for 55 years before he passed away in September 1994. He always referred to her as “Angel”. Frances was also predeceased by her brother Newton Cannon, MD who died in service during World War ll.

Frances graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a Bachelor’s degree in Foods and Nutrition. After marrying she resided in Nashville, Tenn., where she taught Home Economics in both high school and junior college while Bob was serving in the Navy during World War ll. In 1948, they moved to Chattanooga and started their family.

Frances and Bob were longtime members of First Centenary United Methodist Church and were active in the YoMaCo Sunday School class. In 1958, the family moved to Signal Mountain where Frances gained her reputation as hostess for wonderful parties that entertained their large group of friends. Cooking was her passion. She submitted numerous recipes to several of the local Chattanooga cookbooks. Other activities were her Bridge club and Garden club. In 2000 Frances moved her church membership to Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the Sunday services there.

Frances is survived by her sons, Newton A. Walker (Jayne Rose) of Columbia, S.C., and Don C. Walker, MD of Peachtree City, Ga., and her brother-in-law Kenneth Walker of Thousand Oaks, Calif. She is also survived by her grandchildren, William C. Walker (Rebecca) and Haley Rose Walker Lawson (Michael) all of Columbia, S.C., and great-grandchildren Stella Rose Walker, Harvey, Sullivan and Winston Lawson of Columbia, S.C.

Frances will be buried in Dickson, Tenn., on Monday, Feb. 17, with a graveside service at 10 a.m. in Union Cemetery at Dickson.

A Memorial Service will be held at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church in the Marr Chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 S. Moore Road.
