Charles Evans Cliett

BYRON - Dr. Charles Evans Cliett passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at the age of 82.

The son of the late Clyde M. and Paralee Witt Short, Dr. Cliett was born on February 21, 1939, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In high school, Dr. Cliett was a member of the swing band, marching band, and the Aeronautics Club. He graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1957. As a young man, Dr. Cliett enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served from 1958 to 1962 in the Intelligence Service during the Cold War. Following his time in the military, Dr. Cliett attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) from the University of Chattanooga. He went on to earn his Master of Arts Degree (MA) and finally his Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychology (PhD) from the University of Georgia. With a gifted mind and a heart for teaching, Dr. Cliett taught many students as a Graduate Professor of Psychology at East Carolina University and a Professor of Psychology at Middle Georgia State University for several years until his retirement in 2014. He also served his country as a Contract Manager in Washington D.C. for the Department of Defense.

In his spare time, Dr. Cliett earned his pilot’s license, became a skilled sailor, enjoyed the open roads on a motorcycle and was an avid bicyclist. He was also passionate about music and played many instruments including the saxophone, clarinet, guitar, piano, flute, and the recorder.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Cliett was preceded in death by his brother, C. Malcolm Short, II.

His memory will forever be treasured by his adoring wife of 13 years, Ashley R. Gentry of Byron; brother, S. Scott Short (Lynn) of Signal Mountain, Tennessee; and his nieces, Stephanie Pierce of Nashville, Tennessee; and Suzanne Junered of Longmont, Colorado.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held only for his immediately family, at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at The Farmhouse at McCullough.
