William Payne

William E. "Dub" Payne, 85, of Hixson, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012.Dub was born in Morgan County, Ala., and attended high school in Shelbyville, Tenn., where he played on the basketball team. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served during World War II on the U.S.S. Buckley.Dub was retired from Tennessee Valley Authority. He was a member of Hixson Presbyterian Church. Dub enjoyed his retirement, his friends from church, his neighbors, and the Corvair Club members, and Alabama football.He was preceded in death by his parents, F.J. and Bernice Payne; sister, Dean Crowell; and beloved son, Michael Payne.He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elise Maupin Payne; his son, Elliott (Susan) Payne, of Arlington, Tenn.; grandchildren, Emily (Bradley) Hill, of Olive Branch, Miss., Trey Payne, of Slayden, Miss., Jake (Crystal) Payne, of Marian, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Chelsey Hill and McKenzie Hill, of Olive Branch, Miss.; and a brother, Willard (Emogene) Payne, of Shelbyville, Tenn.The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home.Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. J. Arthur Wood and the Rev.
