Joseph Simmons Bird Sr., 81, of Apison, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at his residence.

Estoria Burton

Estoria N. "Mrs. Burt" Burton, 86, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at a local health care facility.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Burton Sr.; parents, Bill and Leola Benjamin Noble; and brother, Charlie Noble.

Survivors include her sons, Alonza, Wilson Jr., and Eddie (Monica) Burton; daughters, Barbara (Lee) Bowman and Stephanie Kay (Roddrick) Tumlin; 20 grandchildren; sister, Leola Paige, Dayton, Ohio; cousin, Sherman Sparks; brother-in-law, Eddie Burton; sister-in-law, Ocie Brittian.

Services will be held at noon, Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home with Rev. Meredith Jackson officiating.

Interment in Monday, March 1, 2010 at 10 a.m. at National Cemetery.

Genevieve Bush

Genevieve Bush, 75, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, in a local hospital.

Mary Cooper

Mary Vinnie Cooper, 87, of Chattanooga, departed this life on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.

She was born in Lafayette, Ala., on Aug. 16, 1923 to Annie Pearl Williams.

Mrs. Cooper was the widow of James Timmons and Elzie Cooper. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She served on the Usher Board and in the Church Choir.

Survivors include: niece, Laura Hampton, Chicago, Ill.; nephew, George U. Lane Jr., Atlanta; cousins, Orlando (Louise) Williams and Arthur (Naomi) Williams; three stepchildren, Earlean Hurst, James (Jacqueline) Cooper and Bettie Gross; several stepgrandchildren including Andriene Stubbs (primary caregiver), and a host of other relatives and friends.

Public may view after noon today, Feb. 26, 2010, and family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. at Reuben Strickland Memorial Chapel

Funeral services will be noon Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Reuben Strickland Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Penney, officiating.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Michael Dawkins

Michael Anderson Dawkins, 55, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at a local hospital.

Rebecca Ellis

Rebecca W. Ellis lost her battle with Multiple Sclerosis on her 61st birthday, Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, in a local hospital.

She attended GPS, graduated from Cleveland High School, went on to graduate from UTC in 1971 and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Rebecca was an English teacher and later worked for AmSouth Bank when it was First Federal. She was a devoted daughter and mother and was a shining example of optimism and determination.

Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents, N.E. "Nat" Wooten Jr. and Virginia Warrenfells Wooten; niece, Courtney Ann Wooten; and daughter, Amy Ellis.

Survivors include her daughter, Laura Ellis, of Chattanooga; brothers, Joseph T. Wooten and Dr. N. Eric Wooten III; niece, Anna Grace Wooten, and nephew, Preston Wooten of Bozeman, Mont.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S. Moore Road.

Burial will be held at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Ann Elizabeth Evans, 62, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at a local hospital.

Allen Friddell

Frankie "Allen" Friddell III, 11-months old, of Harrison, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, from his earthly home.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, David Alvey and Linnie Friddell; great-uncle, Stanley Friddell; cousin, Scotty Dahl.

He is survived by his father and mother, Frank and Courtney Friddell Jr.; grandparents, Frank and Penny Friddell Sr., William and Carol Alvey, all of Harrison; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Harden and the Rev. Lloyd Harvill officiating.

Interment will follow in Mcinturff Cemetery with uncles, Michael Friddell, Nicholas Friddell, Michael Alvey and William Alvey Jr. serving as pallbearers.

Susie Garth

Susie Mae Garth, 81, departed this life on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, in an area hospital.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1929 to Mary Cater and Oscar Watkins.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Sharon Pentecostal Deliverance Church of God, 1400 East 48th St., Chattanooga, TN 37407, with Pastor Jo Ann Walker officiating.

Her resting place will be at Forest Hills Cemetery.

W. C. Gilley

W.C. Gilley, 90, of Lookout Valley Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010.

W.C. grew up on Sand Mountain (Fyffe, Ala.) where he met his beloved wife of 69 years, Grace Rogers Gilley. W.C. was employed during World War II in Detroit, Mich. at the Bonn Aluminum factory whose primary mission was the building of the Spitfire aircraft where he was instrumental in the design of the air-cooled engine. W.C. moved his family to the Chattanooga area after the war and was employed by Crane Enamel (later known as Rockwell International) where he worked for 35 years. He loved his community and was always proud to say that Grace knew most of the children in the Valley as she taught Kindergarten at John A. Patten Elementary for over 30 years. He was a faithful and loving husband of 69 years, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather. W.C. is the last surviving member of a family of 12 whose family founded the gospel singing group "The Singing Gilley Quartet." He was a member of North Chattanooga Church of God for many years and recently attended Lookout Valley Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Gilley; sons, Don Gilley (Beverly) and Tim Gilley; daughter, Myra Gilley Fuller (Lee); granddaughter, Tiffany Gilley Tabb (Greg); and great-granddaughters, Finley and Harper Tabb. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of his life will be held at Lane Funeral Home located on Ashland Terrace, Red Bank, Tenn.

The family will receive friends today at 1 p.m. followed by the service at 3 p.m. at the Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. William Colter, Rev. Jerry Yother and Darrell and Angela Smith.

Mary Jo Grems-Lewis

Mary Jo Grems-Lewis, 92, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010.

Mary Jo was a graduate from GPS in 1935 and received a B.S. degree from Western College for Women, now a part of Miami University of Ohio and also, received her Masters of Education, from The University of Chattanooga.

Mary Jo worked as a laboratory technician at Erlanger hospital, was a Science teacher at Hixson Jr. High School and started teaching Science at the Girls Preparatory School in 1966 and retired in 1982.

She was instrumental in establishing the first blood bank at Erlanger Hospital.

Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Chattanooga Book Club and North Chattanooga Sewing Club.

She was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward G. Grems Jr.; and husband, Stanley J. Lewis.

Survivors include her son, Edward "Ted" Grems III, his wife, Kelly, and daughter, Laura, of Vienna, Va.; daughter, Mary Grems, of Houston, Texas; daughter, Charlotte Grems Holland, her husband, Phillip, three children, Tyler Clark, his wife, Jessica and great-grandson, Kenton and Ryan Clark, and daughter, Sarah Clark, of White Pine, Tenn.; stepson, Mattson Lewis, his wife, Reese Lewis, three children, Kenan Lewis , Wheeler Lewis and Mary Mattson Lewis.

A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Chattanooga Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. Perry McCallen officiating.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Second Presbyterian Church at 700 Pine St., Chattanooga, TN 37402 with Dr. Perry McCallen officiating.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Monta Halcomb

Monta Jean Halcomb passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, after a 7-year battle with leukemia, however she died suddenly from other complications.

She was formerly from Corbin and Gray, Ky. and retired from J.C. Penny after 30 years. She was a member of Bayside Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester Arthur and Mellie May Martin; brother, Everett Martin.

Monta was such a devoted mother and grandmother and was "granny" to those who knew her.

Survivors are daughters, Sharon Lee, Chattanooga, Sandra (Mike) Peppers, Ooltewah; granddaughter, Brittany Peppers (Tyler) Blakely; great-grandson, Kingston Maddox Blakely; brothers, Randel Odell Martin, Charles (Carol) Martin; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel with Rev. Grady Cooper officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Debra Jean Harris, 56, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, in a Knoxville hospital.

Survivors: sons, Arthur Cox and Eric Johnson; daughters, Erica (Albert Lee) Adkins, Trabue (Robert Sr.) Brown and Andrea Johnson; 15 grandchildren; parents, Arthur and Eliza Harris, all of Chattanooga; sisters, Vanessa Harris, Shelia (Marcus) Walker, both of Knoxville and Annette (Dan) Tolliver, of Chattanooga; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Eddie Jones

Eddie Lee Jones was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010.

He was born Sept. 22, 1948 in Chattanooga to the late Cornelius Freeman and Carrie Bell Jones.

He was employed by Eckerd-Rite Aid Drugs for 28 years as a truck driver. He was a fun loving person who could warm up anyone's heart with his smile. He loved to cook, entertain and spend time with his friends and family.

Later in life he accepted Christ as his Savior. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Ernest Thaxton and William Freeman; one sister, Mildred Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory his three children, Deon (Tonica) Jones, Nyree (Daemus) Taylor, Tameka (Myron) Butler; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Patton, Alice (Eugene) Norman, Goldie Thomas; six brothers, Herschel (Edith) Garrett, John Lewis, Bobby (Janice), Joseph, James Sr., Alfonzo Jones; one aunt, Lillie Sturdivant; a very special friend, Isabelle Moneyham; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Temple Fellowship Church.

Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

John Norris

John Norris, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at age 89.

He was born in Seco, Ky., on January 20, 1921. He retired from Chattem Drug & Chemical Co.

He is survived by his wife, Inez Norris; daughter, Mary Ann Henegar and son, James R.(Frances) Norris; sister, Jeanette Mathis; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by one son, Lawrence Morgan; four sisters, and one brother.

He was honest, patient and kind, generous and understanding. He was a blessing and source of strength to his family. "Well done, good and faithful servant."

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 26, 2010, at Forrest Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Smith officiating.

Dainty Preston

Dainty Preston, 81, went home on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, to be with her Lord and Savior, whom she served faithfully for over 70 years.

A native of Relief, Ky., she was a resident of Florida for many years before moving to the Chattanooga area in 2009.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, son, and husband.

Dainty is survived by her son, Kevin Preston and his wife, Beth; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and countless cherished friends.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend; her greatest legacy is a life lived in testimony to loving, honoring and faithfully following Jesus Christ.

Dorothy Roth

Dorothy A. Roth, 88, a resident of Deland, Fla., and Chattanooga, went to be with her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, in Deland, Fla.

Ms. Roth was born in Chattanooga and graduated from Central High School in 1939. She retired from Bell South Telephone Co. in 1981 and was a member of the AT&T Pioneers. After her retirement, she became a member of Florida Board of Realtors.

She was a long term member of East Ridge United Methodist Church and the Joy Class there. Some of her favorite scriptures were 1 John 3:2-3 and Psalm 23.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred L. Roth and Effie Hyde Roth; and a sister Louise Reed.

Ms. Roth is survived by her brother Fred L. (Lenora) Roth Jr.; brother-in-law, Lamar Reed; nephews, Steve (Ann) Reed, David (Alicyne) Roth, Jeff (Clarice) Roth; niece, Jennefer (David) Payne and special lifelong friends, Mildred V. Thompson and Ysolina Robidere.

Funeral services will 1 p.m. today, Feb. 26, 2010 at East Ridge united Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Sauer officiating.

Rosevelyn Varner

Rosevelyn Cox Varner, 85, of Soddy-Daisy, died on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, in Huntsville, Ala.

Our beloved "Nana" was born July 24, 1924 to the late Bertha Faye Headley Cox and Harvey Barton Cox. After spending most of her childhood in Doctor's Inlet Florida, she relocated to the Soddy-Daisy area where she married the late James Ralph Varner. She was a familiar face at Soddy-Daisy Middle School where she was the bookkeeper for many years. Mrs. Varner was an active member of First Baptist Church of Soddy-Daisy until her recent relocation to Huntsville.

In addition to her husband of 47 years, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lela Faye Varner Malone; her parents and two brothers, Harvey Barton Cox II and Thomas Eugene Cox.

Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Varner Reisenwitz, of Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren, Lauri Smit, Tami Malone and Meghan Malone, of Austin, Texas, Hillary Bishop, Haley Hash and Evelyn Reisenwitz, of Huntsville, Ala. and Cathy Sullivan, of Birmingham, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Evan Creech, Leland and Landri Smit along with several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the funeral home chapel with Dr. Seton Tomyn officiating.

She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Annie Wooley

Annie Floyd Knox Wooley, 78, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at a local hospital.

She was born on June 17, 1931, the third child of 12 born to the late James and V.T. Knox.

Annie was a faithful member of Westside Baptist Church, where she served faithful as a choir member and a member of Esther Class in Sunday school.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin brothers, James and John; and sister, Marrion.

Survivors include her children, Clinton (Mary Green) Wooley, who have three children and eight grandchildren; Orlando (Wynell) Wooley, who have children and grandchildren; and Patricia Ann Wooley, who has one daughter, Ashley Marie Scruggs, aka as "Mama's granddaughter"; brothers and sisters, Robert, Leon, Lester, Allan, Ida Mae, Jean Author, Geraldine, and Reba; other family and friends.

William Charles "Bill" Yeary, 62, of Harrison, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Yeary; daughters, Andrea Sams, of Rossville, Tiffany Burrows, of Ringgold, Ga., Michelle Lowe, of East Ridge; two half brothers, Jeff and Jimmy Webb, of LaFayette, Ga.

Leamon Barkley Jr.

ANTIOCH -Leamon Barkley Jr., 72, formerly of Chattanooga, died suddenly on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at his residence in Antioch.

He was retired from the New York City Board of Education and current president of the Hickory Woods Estates Home Owners Association.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leamon Barkley Sr. and mother, Annie Thelma Strickland; and stepfather Robert Strickland. He was a member of the church of Christ for over 60 years and was a faithful servant to the day he was called home to meet the LORD.

Survivors: devoted wife of 44 years, Betty Grace Barkley; loving son, Reginald (Calandra) Barkley; devoted daughter, Regina Campbell; son-in-law, John Campbell III; four beloved grandchildren, John Luke Campbell, Jamil Barkley, Jamiya Barkley and Jayla Barkley; two sisters, Betty J. (Grover) Thompson and JoAlva Strickland; four sisters-in-law, Dora Ray, New York, Brenda (George) Branch, Linda (Thurman) Smith and Mertice Whittle, all of North Carolina; a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and a devoted family in the body of Christ.

Everett Fields

PIKEVILLE -- Everett Fields, 84, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010.

He was a member of Shady Vale Church of God, and a United States Navy Veteran serving in WWII. Everett was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Fields.

Raymond Flowers

MILLINGTON -- Raymond Guy Flowers, 84, passed away Friday, Feb 19, 2010, at his home in Millington.

He was raised in Chattanooga by the Fitch and Parker family on Missionary Ridge. At 17 he joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Ashland, LSD-1 in the South Pacific in the Marianas and Philippines. He retired as a CPO from the Navy after 27 years and then served as the police chief at the Millington, Tenn., Naval Air Station.

Survivors are his wife, children, grandchildren and local nephews, Jenks and John Parker.

SOUTH PITTSBURG -- Jimmy P. Haley Sr., 63, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, in a Chattanooga hospital.

Mr. Haley was born on Feb. 21, 1947 to the late John P. and Sarah Baldwin Haley. He was of the Baptist faith and was formerly employed by Galaxy Carpet Mill for 21 years. He loved coffee, the Pirate, Tennessee Football and was an avid fan of the South Pittsburg Pirates.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death brothers, Charles Smith, John Smith, Lonnie Kilgore, Charles Robbins, Bobby Hale.

Survivors include his children, Jimmy P. (Diana) Haley Jr. and Lyne (Tim) Haley Garman, both of South Pittsburg; sister, Mary (Vinson) Crawford, of Bridgeport, Ala.; brothers Buddy Smith, of Sequatchie and Clyde (Betty) Smith, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sisters-in-law, Trudy Kilgore and June Robbins, of South Pittsburg, Joyce Haley, of Bridgeport and Opal Haley, of Hollywood, Ala.; grandchildren, Phylicia Haley, Emily Garman, Garett Garman and Aaron Garman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. CST Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ronnie Case, Terry Case and John Offenberker officiating.

Interment will follow in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

CLEVELAND -- Joyce Clayton Sharp, 77, passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 2010, at her residence.

Joyce graduated from Chattanooga High School, Chattanooga. She had lived in Cleveland for the past 42 years. During her entire time in Cleveland, she was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she actively participated in many of its ministries.

She is survived by her husband, John E. "Ed" Sharp Jr., Cleveland; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Marc Seinfeld, Ellicott City, Md.; one son, John Sharp III, Cleveland, Tenn.; grandsons, Matthew and Jason Seinfeld, of Ellicott City, Md.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at 4 p.m. at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Cliff Hudson and Rev. Jen Newell officiating.

He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran, he retired from US Pipe and was a member of the IBEW local 175, American Legion Post 95, Masonic Lodge 113 and White Oak Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Omie Shavers; sister, Mary Katherine Craig; brothers, Cecil Shavers, Paul Shavers, Carmon Shavers and Huey Lee Shavers.

He is survived by his daughter, Star (Stacy) Hickman, South Pittsburg, Tenn.; son, Neal (Amonie) Shavers, New Salem, Ga.; sister Maggie (Bill) Wanamaker, Bryant, Ala.; three grandsons, Justin Williams, Matt Hickman and Jett Shavers; nieces and nephews.

Dr. Ralph Buice Jr.

Dr. Ralph L. Buice Jr. passed away Tuesday, Feb 24, 2010, at his home.

Dr. Ralph Buice was a 39 year veteran of Fernbank Science Center and the DeKalb County School System. While attending Georgia Tech, he often visited Fernbank Science Center to work with the astronomy team. His volunteer efforts led to a position at Fernbank where he was instrumental in working with NASA to develop tracking of satellites in the early years.

As a result, the Apollo Six capsule was placed at the Science Center. Dr. Buice was involved in the recovery of the "lost" satellite Pageos.

As a Chemistry instructor he inspired hundreds of students in Independent Study Classes, the Scientific Tools and Techniques Program and other, Fernbank programs. In more recent years, his duties included mentoring teachers and working with students doing independent research projects.

He was very instrumental in developing the partnership with NASA's Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) at the Science Center. Over the years he has supported science instruction in, the school system in a variety of means including working with young teachers to judging in science fairs.

Dr. Buice enjoyed traveling throughout the world. He often took guests with him on his adventures and encouraged others to live their own adventures. He loved food, wine, and life.

Predeceased by his mother, Sara Edwards Buice; father, Ralph Lendon Buice; sister, Elizabeth Ann Buice.

Survivors include his brother, Rick Buice, sister-in-law, Fran Buice and nieces, Kristi and Elizabeth Buice, Fredrick and Smithfield, several cousins in Chattanooga, close friends, and his Fernbank Science Center family.

MIDDLETOWN, Del. -- Angela Jo Parrott passed away at her home on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, after a long battle with cancer.

Jo was born Aug. 8, 1945 and was the daughter of the late Ernest and Grace Foster of Rossville.

Jo was a chef and seamstress who loved spending time with her family. For those who knew her she was described as someone with a lot of "Class".

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Cathie Rigsby.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ronald; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Penny, from Middletown, Del., and Ronald "Chip" and Susan from Chattanooga; and her five grandchildren, Emily, Brandon, Autumn, Nicholas and Tyler Parrott.

She is also survived by her sister, Becky Reed; mother-in-law, Mildred Baggett; and sister-in-law, Sandra Parrott.

Services will be private.
