Alonzo Brown

Alonzo "Bunny" Brown, 55, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010, in Antioch, Tenn., at his residence.

He was born July 24, 1956. He was of the Baptist faith and loved the Lord. He was a chef at many restaurants in Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by father, Joe N. Brown Sr; brothers, Raymond Brown and Arthur L. Brown; sister, Mary Ann Brown; son, Keven Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Brown; children, Vincent Florence, Sonia Bennett, Kenneth Smith, Stephanie Mayes, Camelia Davis; mother, Luedora Brown Bonds; sisters, Ernestine Parker, Liz (Ralph) Boston; brothers, Joe N. (Barbara) Brown Jr., and Richard Brown; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in the funeral home chapel.

The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, 622-9995.

Barbara Brown, 97, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010, at her residence.

Blanche Delany

Blanche Bowman Delany, 106, died Saturday, March 13, 2010.

Even after she turned a century old she was still active in her senior group. Mrs. Delany was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Tenn., and moved to Chattanooga where she was a member of East Ridge Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Hahn Bowman and Harriett Banks Bowman; her husband, Michael Lewis "Irish" Delany; granddaughter, Kathleen Ogle; and great-grandson, Keith Pinckard.

Survivors include her daughters, Jo Delany Pinckard, of Chattanooga, Rebecca Delaney Ogle, of Houston, Texas; grandchildren Mike (Frances) Pinckard, of Chattanooga, Dee (Debbie) Pinckard, of Knoxville, Scott (Betsy) Pinckard, of Hamilton, Ga., Marcy (Alan) Hall, of Ringgold, Ga., Mark (Donna) Ogle, of Arlington, Texas, Tammy Ogle, of Monte Carlo, Monaco, and Kimberly (Charles) Newcomb, of Houston, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cleveland, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. today at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road.

Ethel Mae Fritts, 84, of Soddy-Daisy went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 13, 2010, in an area health care facility.

Julia Haynes

Julia Elizabeth "Sally" Haynes, 75, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

She was the daughter of the late Charles Cornelius and Addie Mae Hillis Flynn. She was born in Palmer, Tenn., and lived most of her life in Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, LdT Commander Claude M. Flynn and William H. Flynn.

She was an active member of the Lake Hill Church of Christ since 1962, taught the four and five year old Bible school class, and later became a member of the Adult Bible School Class. Mrs. Haynes served as Republican precinct chairperson in Harrison for many years. She was the recipient of the Republican Party Lifetime Service Award along with the Muffet Brock Award for Outstanding Precinct Chairperson.

Survivors include her husband, Don Haynes Sr., to whom she married in 1961; two sons, Don Haynes Jr., and wife, Patti, and Paul Kevin Haynes and wife Lana, all of Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Matthew and Tanner Haynes, and Leaha Artalona; sister and brother-in-law, Charlestine and James Grant of East Ridge; two sisters-in-law, Grace Flynn, of Tullahoma, Tenn., and Jan Flynn, of Milwaukie, Ore.; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Davey Daniel, Patti Davis and the staff of COHA Group and the staff of Hospice of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Minister Ray Winton officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 5 and 6 until 8 p.m. today and from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Chapel.

Tammy Henderson, 41, of Signal Mountain, died Sunday, March 14, 2010, at her home.

Bernard Hubbard

Bernard W. Hubbard, 92, of Chattanooga, passed from this life on March 12, 2010.

He was the son of the late Edward C. and Flora Hubbard of Geraldine, Ala. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II with the 3rd Bn 135th Infantry and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a member of VFW Post 1289 and the American Legion.

Bernard was a member of Terra Vista Baptist Church and retired from DuPont.

He was an avid woodworker and gardener. He especially enjoyed his flowers and bird watching.

He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 68 years, Velma Gilbert Hubbard in 2007; his beloved granddaughter, Cathia Mooney Strickland Mattingly; son-in-law, Gene Mooney; and sisters, Edna, Ruth, Phyllis and Helen.

Survivors are four children, Joyce Mooney, Geraldine, Ala., Jim Hubbard, Chattanooga, Elaine Tate, Chattanooga, and Donna (Bob) Davis, Ooltewah; six grandchildren, Cristia Mooney Jolley, Kim Hubbard, Jamey Hubbard, Bill Tate Jr., John Tate and Rick Tate; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Gaynelle (Charles) Wigley, Chattanooga, and brother, Edward C. (Helen) Hubbard Jr., Oxford, Ala.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, March 15, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Cross officiating.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Bill Tate Jr., John Tate, Rick Tate, Jamey Hubbard, and great-grandsons, Ben and Dan Strickland and Lee Jolley.

Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Philip Long

Philip Randall Long, 60, of Red Bank passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 12, 2010, at his home.

He was a 1967 graduate of Red Bank high School. He played the trumpet for the Pride of the Southland Marching Band for his revered Tennessee Vols. Philip followed in his father's footsteps and joined the United States Marine Corps and served In Vietnam. Philip was a lifelong musician, enjoying playing and listening to Bluegrass, his passion. He enjoyed walking and exercising and was known to walk several miles a day. Philip was a proud father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Lewis Long.

Survivors include his mother, Irene Cooper Long; son, John (Cherie) Long; granddaughters, Morgan and Maddie Long; brothers, Jon (Becky) Bodkin, Steve (Lezlie) Long, Owen (Pam) Long; several nieces and nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March, 15, 2010, at the North Chapel with the Rev. Ed Malone officiating.

Interment will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Military Honors.

Helen Miller

Helen Timney Miller passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and caregivers on March 13, 2010, after a long and courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease.

She was born in Lonaconing, Md., on November 17, 1925, to John and Hetta Timney. She was known to most and lovingly to her grandchildren as Timmie. She graduated from Frostburg State Teachers' College, and all of her adult life was devoted to education-first, as an energetic teacher and then, as an innovative and beloved head of the lower schools of Metairie Park Country Day School in Metairie, La., Ashley Hall in Charleston, S.C., and the Wright School (now UMS-Wright) in Mobile, Ala. She spent 25 summers as the assistant director of Camp Green Cove in Tuxedo, N.C. After her retirement she moved to New Orleans, and after Hurricane Katrina she made her home on Lookout Mountain.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Jenny Miller, Mary Cooper, and Ruth Phillips, and her brothers: John Timney, Daniel Tiumey, and Thomas Timney.

She is survived by her daughters: Susan Miller Howick, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and Amy Miller Lapeyre and her husband Chuck, of New Orleans, La.; her grandchildren: Hope McCrackin Howick, Meg Howick Torrence and her husband Chas, Sara Michal Howick, Charles Christopher Lapeyre, Kathryn Timney Lapeyre, and Rebecca Buckley Lapeyre; three nieces and six nephews; and her dear brother Harrison Warnick Timney.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Arlew Lovelady and her capable staff at My House Too for their devoted and loving care of our mother and grandmother. We thank Amedisys of North Georgia, also.

Nancy Mae Shaw, 61, of Red Bank, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at her residence.

A native of Newark, Ohio, she lived in Red Bank the last 17 years.

Her son, Lloyd Shaw and her sister, Carol Kirkwood preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Frank Shaw; sons and daughters-in-law, Ivan and Melissa Shaw and Norman and Sue Shaw along with her grandchildren; Ivan Shaw, Allisha Shaw, Haley Shaw, Lexi Laymon, Jerrell Quarles, Misty Quarles, Ashley Stratton, Brittany Stratton and Chris Stratton; and a special niece, Mary Lovark, of Newark, Ohio.

Jeanne Elliott Vaught, 84, of Chattanooga, with family at her side celebrated a reunion with Jesus and her husband, Bill, of 67 years, on Saturday, March 13, 2010.

She was a member of Chamblee Heights Full Gospel Baptist Church serving as Deaconess, secretary, and former Sunday school teacher. Through the years she was a staunch supporter of International Board of Jewish Missions, 700 Club, TBN, and Benny Hinn Ministries.

She pressed toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Elliott Cope and Paul Herbert Martin.

Left to carry on the Lord's work for Jeanne are her survivors: sister, Ann Ainscough; brother, Dr. John D. Martin; four daughters, Margaret (Charles) Lee, Dianne (Mike) Bean, Mary Lou Vaught, Billie (Mike) King; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Howard Young

Howard Young, 84, Red Bank died Saturday, March 13, 2010.

He was a member of Spring Creek Rd. Baptist Church. Mr. Young led choirs in several local churches over the years. He was employed with Stamps Baxter Music Company for seventeen years and later retired from Bowman Transportation.

The son of the late David and Virgie Young, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Carr Young and brother, Clifford Young.

Survivors include his daughter, Joy (Guy) Kirby, Ringgold; son, Barry Young, Red Bank; grandson, Gavin; sisters, Alma Abee, Hickory, N.C., Beatrice (Amos) Lingerfelt, Icard, N.C.; brother, David (Paulette) Young, Hildebran, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born on December 21, 1921, to Lewis and Betty Dickerson Sartain who preceded her in death along with her husband, Doyle Myers; sisters, Hazel Hawk, Stella Argo, and Alberta Miley; brothers Edison, Mark, Louie, and Minter Sartain.

She was a member of the Elkhead Church of Christ.

Robert Clark

ROSSVILLE - Robert Pierce Clark, 76, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010.

He was born in Benton, Tenn., to the late, Luther Thomas and Margaret Clark, but has lived in the North Georgia area for most of his life. He was a Navy Veteran, having served during the Korean War and was a member of Cloud Springs Baptist Church. He retired from Synthetic Industries in 2001 after more than 20 years of service as an Industrial Engineer, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Cecil Clark.

Survivors include his loving wife of more than 46 years, Mary Ellen Corfitzson Clark, of Rossville, Ga.; two daughters and son-in-law, Debbie Clark Evans, of Cleveland, Tenn., and Traci Clark and (Dale) Hair, of Columbia, S.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and (Debra) Clark, of Rossville, Ga., and Robert and (Lisa) Clark, of Chattanooga; five brothers, Tom Clark, of Anderson, S.C., Edward Clark, of Germantown, Tenn., James W. Selma Harkleroad

ELLIJAY - Selma P. Harkleroad, 89, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was a member of First Methodist Church in Americus, Ga., and Simpson United Methodist Church in Rossville, Ga. She taught Sunday School for years at Simpson United Methodist and was past president of the Golden Agers. She had worked for State Farm Insurance. Mrs. Harkleroad was a graduate of Americus (Ga.) High School and attended Georgia Southwestern College.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gabriel M. Pityer; and her second husband, Bert Harkleroad.

Survivors include three sons, Richard M. Pityer, Michael H. Pityer, and Robert J. Pityer; one step-son, Derryl Harkleroad; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; one sister, Elizabeth Ann Cox.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Simpson United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus, Ga. at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Simpson United Methodist Church.

William Lewis

CHICKAMAUGA - William Terry Lewis, 71, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010.

He was a life long resident of Chickamauga. Terry retired from the United States Postal Service in 2001 after 32 years of employment.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Bertha Lewis.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Shelly Lewis, of Chickamauga; and three grandchildren, Mady, Josie, and Blake.

The Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010, with Brother Charles McElhaney officiating, at Chickamauga City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-9 p.m. today, March 15, 2010, and prior to the service Tuesday.

William Williams

ROSSVILLE - William "Carl" Williams, Jr., 84, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010.

He was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and was of the Methodist faith. He was an Army Veteran of WW II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and retired from Combustion Engineering after more than 15 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Beulah Williams Sr.; his wife, Marjorie Ellen Williams; brother, Paul Williams; and sister, Frances Barbee.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and (Vicki) Williams, of Rossville, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Georgina and (Mike) Williams, of Chickamauga, Ga.; three grandchildren, Michael Williams, Margie Boehm, and Becky Avakiam; six great-grandchildren, and four nephews, Richard Barbee, David, Timmy, and Lamar Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Minister Clyde Painter officiating.

Burial will follow in the Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. today and prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
