Tennessee: Gibbons to discuss 'status' of campaign in press conferences

NASHVILLE - Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons, a GOP candidate for governor, has scheduled news conferences in Nashville and in Memphis Friday to "offer a significant update on the status of his gubernatorial campaign," his campaign says.

Gibbons campaign spokeswoman Bonny Kinney would not say when asked whether he planned to bail out of the GOP gubernatorial primary.

"I can't comment on it," she said.

The Nashville new conference is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CDT at the Tennessee Municipal League building near the state Capitol. A later news conference is scheduled at Mr. Gibbons' office in Memphis.

Mr. Gibbons' GOP opponents have far exceeded him in fundraising. And a just-released poll of the contest released by Rasmussen Reports doesn't include Mr. Gibbons as one of the "major" candidates.

Other Republicans running in the Aug. 5 GOP primary are U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville. Democrats in the race are former state House Majority Leader Kim McMillan.
