The Historic Cleveland Neighborhood Association, according to a statement from the group issued Wednesday, opposes the proposed rezoning of a Church Street home owned by Lee University.
According to the statement, Lee University is proposing to rezone 1780 Church Street from "residential" to "professional/institution" and the Cleveland City Council will consider the request at the next scheduled City Council meeting on Monday.
The proposed "professional/institution" zoning "is overly broad for Lee's stated intended use as described at the November Planning Commission Meeting on Nov. 20, 2018," the statement reads. The use was described as "a historic showpiece for light entertainment and the occasional overnight guests," according to the statement.
Association officials and others plan to ask city leaders to "consider a compromise that keeps Church Street Corridor zoned as R1 but allows Lee to utilize the property for its state intended use," according to the statement.
The council will meet Monday for a work session from 1-3 p.m. and for a voting session from 3-5 p.m.
