Hamilton County road closures, shifts and detours for July 9-14

Hamilton County has a number of road closures, shifts and detours planned as crews work on various construction projects in the area.

Below is a list of road activity and precautions for July 9-15, provided by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Interstate 24: Bridge Replacements

Lane shifts are in place on I-24 east and west under the Belvoir Avenue Bridge, at North and South Terrace approaching the Belvoir Avenue Bridge, and on Germantown Road under the I-24 Bridge.

Double interior lane closures will occur on I-24 eastbound between mile markers 182 and 184 for the demolition of the Belvoir Avenue Bridge on July 9 and between July 12-July 15 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Single lane closures and traffic pacing will be required on I-24 westbound during these closures.

There will also be single lane closures in the north and south directions of Germantown Road under the I-24 bridge and at the intersections with North and South Terrace. These closures will occur on July 9, July 10 and between July 13-July 15 from 9 a.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.

Motorists should be aware of the Belvoir Avenue Bridge closure and detour that was put into place on April 20.

There is a 45 mph speed limit reduction throughout the project corridor on I-24.

Interstate 124: Exit ramp and road limitations

No oversized or over dimensional loads on:

Exit 1C northbound Fourth Street

Exit 1C southbound Fourth Street

Exit 1-B M.L. King Boulevard southbound,

M.L. King Boulevard between Chestnut Street and Gateway Avenue

I-24: Resurfacing

The right lane of I-24 West near mile marker 174 and the Lookout Valley/Tiftonia area will be closed this weekend to allow TDOT contract crews to make full-depth concrete repairs. The closure is scheduled to take place from Friday, July 10, at 8 p.m. until Monday, July 13, at 6 a.m, weather permitting. Major traffic impacts are expected and drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible, according to the release.

Interstate 75 at I-24: Interchange Reconstruction

Motorists are asked to watch for trucks entering and exiting the project and should expect multiple lane shifts. Traffic pacing and intermittent shoulder closures may also happen.

Lane closures will occur Sunday nights through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the following locations:

I-75 northbound mile marker 1

1-75 southbound mile marker 3

I-24 eastbound mile marker 184

The speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph throughout the interchange.

I-75 Northbound: Interchange reconstruction continued

I-75 northbound traffic will see a lane shift at the I-75/I-24 split beginning the week of July 12. This temporary shift will locate the split gore area a quarter mile before its current location. During this time, the I-75 northbound welcome center traffic will not be allowed to re-enter the interstate to continue to I-24 westbound. Welcome Center traffic will need to use I-75 northbound and Exit-3B to return to I-24 westbound.

U.S. Highway 27 (Interstate 124): Widening project continues

Work on widening roads from the I-24/US-27 interchange to north of the Ogiati Bridge will continue. Motorists should be alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting and should pay attention to detour signage posted. The speed limit will remain at 45 MPH.

On July 9 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. there will be a southbound lane closure near the I-24 west exit. At least one lane will remain open in each direction on US-27.

I-75: Bridge inspection

Bridge and structure inspections will take place on I-75 from mile marker 0 to mile marker 14.5 on July 9 and July 13-15 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shoulder will be closed.

Market Street (State Road 8): Bridge closure

The Market Street Bridge will be closed to traffic for a quarterly lift operation inspection on July 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Detours will be in place.

I-24 westbound:Lane closure

One lane will be closed as a bridge maintenance crew works at night on the I-14 bridge over 4th Ave. on July 14. This work will take place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

State Road 111: Lane closure

Traffic will be reduced to one lane of traffic in the northbound direction.

Lee Highway (State Road 2): Lane closure

A lane closure will occur between Whirlaway Drive and Jim Snow Way. Traffic may be reduced to a single lane in some locations between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from July 13-July 16.


Taft Highway (SR-8) northbound: Lane closure

Motorists should take caution and be aware of a lane closure at the intersection of Taft Highway and Corral Road with signage and flaggers present. Traffic may be reduced to a single lane in some locations between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. from July 9-July 16.

West Main Street (SR-8): Work zone transition

Mobile lane closures will occur along W. Main Street from Coward Street to Central Ave as crews transition the work zone. Motorists should be aware of signage, cones and flaggers that wil be present between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m from May 28-Aug. 1.

State Road 29 (US-27): Repairing bridge over Big Soddy Creek

Repair of the bridge over Big Soddy Creek will restrict traffic to one lane. Also, one lane of State Road 111 southbound will be closed as it approaches the SR-29 junction.

State Road 2, U.S. Route 64, U.S. Route 11: Improving Edgmon Intersection

Contractors will be working on grading, drainage and paving to improve the intersection at Edgmon Road in Collegedale. Flaggers will be onsite as needed. Trucks entering and exiting the roadway should take extra caution.


State Road 317 Apison Pike: Intermittent flaggers

There will be intermittent flagging during the daytime non-peak hours for vitality work, delivery of materials and equipment.

State Road 58: Rescheduled resurfacing

The final stage of resurfacing SR-58 from the Georgia State line to SR-17 has been rescheduled for mid-August.

SR-8: Road washed out

US-127/Signal Mountain Blvd, from Space House to bottom of mountain

Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction due to the road being washed out. There will be one lane closed with flaggers from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Motorists are encouraged to find alternative routes due to possible delays.
