Chattanooga puts former Councilman Erskine Oglesby on leave following arrest

Erskine Oglesby, Chattanooga's deputy administrator of community development, has been placed on administrative leave after being arrested Tuesday by Chattanooga police for allegedly taking items from a local store without paying.

The former city councilman will remain on administrative leave pending an internal review, according to a Tuesday afternoon news release from Mayor Tim Kelly's office.

"While there is no evidence that any taxpayer resources have been misappropriated, out of an abundance of caution Chief of Staff Joda Thongnopnua has asked Stan Sewell, the city's independent auditor, to conduct an internal investigation," the release said.

Oglesby had passed a background check at the time of his appointment last year.

The city said it would have no further comment due to an active, open investigation.
