Best and worst restaurant inspection reports for the week ending Jan. 24, 2023

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department inspects restaurants twice a year and grades the businesses on a 100-point scale. Scores below 70 require corrective action. Restaurants are reinspected if they fail to meet critical standards.

To file a health-related complaint, call the Department of Environmental Health at 423-209-8110. The scores are original and do not reflect on-the-spot changes, which sometimes lead to upward adjustments.

2584 Battlefield Pkwy., Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; Reasons including inspector observed employee taking cucumbers out of packaging with bare hands applying to side salad about to be served. Maintenance tools and equipment stored in front of and inside of hand sinks making them unusable and inaccessible. Microwave and can opener food contact surfaces not clean to sight and touch. Multiple foods in walk-in and reach-in coolers exceeding the discard date. Accumulation of soil residue on nonfood contact surfaces of ice machine and coolers.

5748 Highway 153; Reasons including no paper towels provided at hand sink at front counter area. Numerous surfaces dirty throughout cookline, dishwashing, and prep areas in kitchen. Foods held longer than 24 hours not properly date-marked. Insect activity noted in kitchen, dishwashing/, and front service areas. Some bulk food products in walk-in freezer and at front service counter not adequately covered/protected. Dish machine soiled/dirty.

9332 Dayton Pike; Reasons including soap dispenser observed empty at the only handwash sink in the kitchen. Cooked chicken observed with improper date marking. Fly trap observed mounted above single use food containers. Multiple items in multiple freezers uncovered. Keep food covered to keep food safe from contamination. Ice scoop stored on a tray containing accumulated food debris. Employee drink on prep table.

1101 Hixson Pike; Reasons including sanitizer bucket in kitchen contains 0ppm sanitizer when tested. This was corrected during inspection. Rice observed cooling for more than two hours (based on owner disclosure) at 104F. Accumulated food debris on can opener blade.

3903 Hixson Pike; Reasons including observed food handler not properly washing hands for the required 20 seconds after sneezing. Mens restroom hand dryer not operable/poor repair and no hand towels provided in restroom. Clean dishes and utensils stored on dirty surfaces. Hood filters dirty.
