A Chattanooga Lookouts trolley crashed into a downtown Chattanooga building as the driver tried to stop a passenger from falling, according to Chattanooga police.

"The driver tried to catch the passenger, the bus ended up on the sidewalk and crashed," Kevin West, the director of communications for the Chattanooga Police Department, said in an email to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

The crash occurred Tuesday evening.

West said the trolley was going north on Broad Street around 7 p.m. and turned left onto West Seventh Street when a passenger "lost his balance and started to fall over to the right side of the bus."

He said there were two passengers on the trolley at the time.

"We're just trying to get the trolley fixed now," Chattanooga Lookouts President Rich Mozingo said by phone. "We're trying to get the damaged assessed, work with our insurance companies and find out what we can do and, hopefully, get that thing up and running pretty quickly."

Mozingo said the driver is OK and the Lookouts have contacted the owners of the building.

The trolley hit a Broad Street building near the Tivoli Theatre. It houses a bank branch and an office furnishings and supplies store.

Mozingo also said he had not been informed if charges would be brought against the bus driver or his company.
