Athlete injured in Ironman Chattanooga dies week after race

A triathlete who suffered a head injury during Chattanooga's Ironman died over the weekend, a week after the race, according to online updates from his family.

Marshall Martin, 58, had been an avid triathlete for more than 30 years, his family said in a post on CaringBridge. He was a native of North Georgia who later moved to Chattanooga, Martin told the Catoosa County News in 2015.

Martin's family posted that Martin had sustained a traumatic brain injury during the bike portion of the race and was being treated at a Chattanooga hospital.

"Marshall is a loving husband, father, brother, friend, teammate, and leader," the post said. "Within every aspect of his life he shows enthusiasm, passion, and a work ethic unlike any other. Marshall is the strongest and most stubborn man we all know and together we are all #M2STRONG."

Martin was moved to hospice in Nashville over the weekend., according to posts on CaringBridge.

"Marshall has finished his last race and crossed that final Ironman finish line," family members said in a post Monday. "He received his final finisher medal with his entrance into Heaven! This was his best race by far and he definitely saved the best for last!"
