Chattanooga-area weekend events include the last days of Ice on the Landing, sandhill crane expedition

As the Chattanooga area thaws out of last week's ice-cold conditions, it's time to plan ahead for what to do this weekend. Ice on the Landing is closing for the season, and qualifying rounds for a statewide songwriters competition are taking place at several local venues. Avid avian enthusiasts will have the opportunity to go on a sandhill crane expedition with Reflection Riding and an ornithology professor from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Here's the chronology.

ARTS

— Photographic Society of Chattanooga continues its holiday show at the Gallery at Blackwell, 71 Eastgate Loop. Society members will have their work displayed, and prints will be available for purchase. Gallery hours are 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. The show will run through Feb. 1. — Jewish Cultural Center, 5461 North Terrace Road, continues its exhibition, "Vessel," featuring the works of 25 local and national artists. The exhibition showcases a variety of vessels, including ships, buildings, vases, the human body and more. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The exhibition will run through Feb. 23. — North River Civic Center, 1009 Executive Drive, Suite 102, Hixson, continues its exhibition, "Fine Art of the West," featuring the works of artist David Fishman that depict "the energy and emotion of the timeless American West." — Institute of Contemporary Art, 752 Vine St., continues its exhibition, "The Dutch House," featuring works by artist Becky Suss inspired by Pulitzer Prize finalist Ann Patchett's 2019 novel of the same name. — In-Town Gallery, 26A Frazier Ave., continues its January exhibition, "Blank Canvas: Make Your Mark!" The exhibition is an interactive experience, featuring a large canvas and various art supplies for visitors to express themselves. Throughout the month, as more people contribute, the collaborative work will continue to grow. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. — Association for Visual Arts, 30 Frazier Ave., continues its exhibition, "Outside/Inside: Paintings, Drawings and Multimedia Works." The exhibition features the works of artists Tom Farnam and Judith Mogul. Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, noon-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. — Hunter Museum of American Art, 10 Bluff View, will host an opening for its newest exhibition, "Networked Nature," at 6 p.m. Thursday. The digital and new media works in the exhibition explore artificial intelligence, machine learning, real-time software, custom algorithms and virtual environments. Admission costs $20; members and youth 17 and under get in free. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday. — Southern Adventist University's School of Visual Arts and Design will open its joint exhibition, featuring local artists Heath Montgomery and Donald Keefe, at 6 p.m. Thursday in the John C. Williams Art Gallery on the second floor of Brock Hall at the university's campus, 4881 Taylor Circle. The exhibition, "Viceversa," showcases paintings and drawings by the artists. — ClearStory Arts, 1673 S. Holtzclaw Ave., will host an opening reception (postponed from Jan. 19) for its Fiber Arts Showcase from 6-8 p.m. Friday. The exhibition features more than 25 local artists working with a variety of textiles, including fabric, yarn and wool. Gallery hours are by appointment Tuesday-Friday. MUSIC

— The Granfalloon, 400 E. Main St., Suite 120, will host The Briar's Americana Showcase with Teni Rane at 7 p.m. Thursday. This is an all-ages event, featuring local music talent. Tickets cost $15 online or at the door. Learn more at granfalloonchattanooga.com.

— "O King" will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, 200 E. M.L. King Blvd. For this free performance, the UTC Department of Music, the Ruth Holmberg professor of American music, the vice chancellor for access and engagement and the Office of Multicultural Affairs are partnering with the cultural center to present a variety of musical and spoken word performances and speakers from the community. — St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, 7555 Ooltewah Georgetown Road, Ooltewah, will host a community singing event at 7 p.m. Thursday. Previously scheduled for Jan. 18, this rescheduled event with the St. Francis congregation will honor the memory of choral composer, arranger, teacher and song leader Alice Parker Pyle. There are no performers or audience; instead, all attendees are participants in communal music making; no previous musical experience or training is required. Learn more at sfaec.org.

— Barrelhouse Ballroom, 1501 Long St., will have multiple shows this weekend. At 8 p.m. Thursday, Town Mountain with Logan Halstead will perform; tickets cost $23 in advance or $27 the day of show. At 9 p.m. Friday, The Weeks with Teddy at Night and Et Cetera will perform; tickets cost $22 in advance or $25 the day of show. At 9 p.m. Saturday, Perpetual Groove will perform; tickets cost $20 in advance or $25 the day of show. At 6 p.m. Sunday, there will be a celebration of life, honoring Dave Webb; suggested donation of $10 benefits the endocrine clinic at St. Jude's Children Hospital. — Tennessee Department of Tourism is sponsoring a statewide songwriters competition, and local qualifying rounds will be held in Chattanooga this weekend. The qualifying rounds will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Gate 11 Distillery, 1400 Market St., Suite 108; at 7 p.m. Saturday at Wanderlinger Brewing Co., 1208 King St.; and at 3 p.m. Sunday at Puckett's, 2 W. — Chattanooga Symphony and Opera will have a superhero-themed concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Auditorium, 399 McCallie Ave. The concert will feature themes from films like "The Avengers," "Superman," "Batman," "Wonder Woman" and more. — Southern Adventist University's School of Music will host a performance by organist Nathan Laube at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists, 4829 College Drive E., Collegedale. Laube, a renowned organ performer, is a member of the organ faculty at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, Germany, as well as an international consultant in organ studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in the United Kingdom. — Ice on the Landing will conclude for the season this weekend with hours from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, 4-6 p.m. Thursday, 3:30-10:30 p.m. Friday, 6:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday, 3-8:30 p.m. Sunday at First Horizon Pavilion, 1826 Reggie White Blvd. Hours are modified to accommodate the Skillet Curling Tournament, which will be from 6-10 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. — Reflection Riding, 400 Garden Road, will host a sandhill crane expedition from 1-5:30 p.m. Saturday. Attendees will begin their expedition at Reflection Riding's campus, where they will join UTC ornithology professor David Aborn for a history and discussion of the sandhill crane population migrating through Tennessee. Attendees will then travel to the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge, where members of the Tennessee Ornithological Society will have spotting scopes and be available to answer questions.  — Chattanooga Elks Lodge #91, 1067 Graysville Road, will host its fourth annual polar plunge fundraising event at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The event benefits students and families in the community through nursing and trade scholarships and other services. — "Celebrate the Seasons: Illuminating Love and Light at Imbolc" will be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at Crabtree Farms, 1000 E. 30th St. Imbolc, meaning "in the belly of the mother," is the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox, and this educational and experiential event is a celebration of fertility, light and love. — Performing Arts League will present its Sunday Showcase at 3 p.m. Sunday at the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St. The showcase features young talent in the performing arts, displaying their skills in choral and instrumental music, dance, drama and musical theater. Tickets cost $10 per person; children 12 and under get in free. — Jewish Documentary Film Series, hosted by the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga, will screen the final film of its four-week run Sunday. The film will screen virtually from noon Sunday-noon Friday and will screen in-person at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Cultural Center, 5461 North Terrace Road. The last film of this year's series, "J'Accuse!," follows two individuals fighting against Lithuania's systemic Holocaust denial. The in-person screening includes free popcorn and a drink.
