Chattanooga-area events this weekend include Romance at Ruby Falls, Chattanooga Boat Show, Black History Month market

As Valentine's Day fast approaches, this weekend has a couple of events for the romantics, including holiday-themed tours at Ruby Falls and an arts and farmers market in Signal Mountain. The Chattery is hosting a Black History Month Night Market featuring local Black businesses and entrepreneurs, and the Chattanooga Boat Show is taking place with an array of vendors selling boats and related equipment. Here's this weekend's chronology.

ARTS

— Jewish Cultural Center, 5461 North Terrace Road, continues its exhibition, "Vessel," featuring the works of 25 local and national artists. The exhibition showcases a variety of vessels, including ships, buildings, vases, the human body and more. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The exhibition will run through Feb. 23. — North River Civic Center, 1009 Executive Drive, Suite 102, Hixson, continues its exhibition, "Fine Art of the West," featuring the works of artist David Fishman that depict "the energy and emotion of the timeless American West." — Institute of Contemporary Art, 752 Vine St., continues its exhibition, "The Dutch House," featuring works by artist Becky Suss inspired by Pulitzer Prize finalist Ann Patchett's 2019 novel of the same name. — Association for Visual Arts, 30 Frazier Ave., continues its exhibition, "Outside/Inside: Paintings, Drawings and Multimedia Works." The exhibition features the works of artists Tom Farnam and Judith Mogul. Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, noon-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. — Southern Adventist University's School of Visual Arts and Design continues its joint exhibition, "Viceversa," in the John C. Williams Art Gallery on the second floor of Brock Hall at the university's campus, 4881 Taylor Circle, Collegedale. — In-Town Gallery, 26A Frazier Ave., will conclude its January exhibition Wednesday. The exhibition, "Blank Canvas: Make Your Mark!," is an interactive experience, featuring a large canvas and various art supplies for visitors to express themselves and grow the collaborative work. — Photographic Society of Chattanooga will conclude its holiday show Thursday at the Gallery at Blackwell, 71 Eastgate Loop. — Hunter Museum of American Art, 10 Bluff View, will have a Vision and Verse event at 6 p.m. Thursday. The event will feature neo-soul singer Zowie Boyd accompanied by Mia Treadwell and Tom Matthews, and poet Erika Roberts will respond to the museum's contemporary collection in a call and response with audience participation. The event is free and open to all. The museum also continues its exhibition, "Networked Nature," featuring digital and new media works that explore artificial intelligence, machine learning, real-time software, custom algorithms and virtual environments. Museum admission costs $20; members and youth 17 and under get in free. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday. The exhibition will run through May 5. — Creative Arts Guild, 520 W. Waugh St., Dalton, will have an opening reception for the exhibition, "Origins, Destinations and Points in Between," from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday. The exhibition, hosted in honor of Black History Month, showcases 50 works by leading Black artists, spanning the past 100 years from the Harlem renaissance to the present. — Area 61 Gallery, 721 Broad St., Suite 100, will have its First Friday event from 6-8 p.m. Friday. The gallery's First Fridays are an opportunity to meet local artists, browse the gallery and shop for art. Chattanooga-based artist Jet Smith will debut his latest body of work, which is an extension of surrealistic imagery tied to computer graphics and dreamscapes. — ClearStory Arts, 1673 S. Holtzclaw Ave., will have its monthly First Friday event from 6-8 p.m. Friday. The event includes new works in the gallery, open studios, a mini market, live demonstrations and more. The gallery will continue its Fiber Arts Showcase, featuring more than 25 local artists working with a variety of textiles such as fabric, yarn and wool. — Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, led by conductor Andrew Crust, will have a masterworks concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Auditorium, 399 McCallie Ave. The concert will feature performances of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's "Ballade in A minor" and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture." — University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra will present a concerto concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the UTC Fine Arts Center, 752 Vine St. The free concert will feature UTC concerto students, performing instrument and vocal works. — Southern Adventist University will host its concerto competition concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists, 4829 College Drive E., Collegedale. Winners of the university's concerto competition, an annual contest for young instrumentalists from across the region, will present solos alongside the university's symphony orchestra. The show will feature a variety of boat dealers and vendors with boat paraphernalia. Tickets cost $15 for single-day admission, $25 for a weekend pass and $6 for children ages 4-10.  — Pi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will host a panel discussion entitled "Pregnancy Deaths Among African American Women" from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Greater Tucker Missionary Baptist Church, 1115 N. Moore Road. The discussion will address the stigma, risks and treatment options available to all pregnant and postpartum women.  — Lula Lake Land Trust will have its bimonthly open gate days from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday at its core preserve, 5000 Lula Lake Road, Lookout Mountain, Ga. Visitors can view Lula Lake, the 110-foot Lula Falls and a bluff overlook. Entry costs $16; a guided hike is also available for $40, which includes entry to the preserve. Registration is required. — Signal Mountain Nursery, 1100 Hubbard Road, Signal Mountain, will host its houseplant festival from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature local vendors, DIY activities and more. Learn more at signalmtnnursery.com.

— Sweetheart Market, hosted by Shop the Market at LLC, will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Arts Community Center, 809 Kentucky Ave., Signal Mountain. — Unity of Chattanooga will host a workshop with May McCarthy, an entrepreneur, speaker, consulting coach and philanthropist, at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3224 Navajo Drive. — Chattanooga Theatre Centre, 400 River St., will present its production of playwright August Wilson's "Seven Guitars" at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The play, one of 10 in Wilson's Century Cycle that explores the decade-by-decade Black experience in America, is set in Pittsburgh in 1948 as friends gather to mourn a blues guitarist and singer who died just as his career was about to take off and follows the events leading up to his death; the play is appropriate for mature audiences.
