Three local organizations recently received grants from the Volunteer Energy Cooperative (VEC) Customers Share foundation.

The foundation's board met to distribute a total of $2,000 in grants, according to a news release. Organizations receiving funds were Central High School FFA ($1,000), Hamilton County Special Tactics and Rescue Services (STARS) ($500) and Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department ($500).

VEC Customers Share, founded in October 2001, has donated more than $7.8 million to various community service organizations across the energy cooperative's 17-county service area. The foundation's funds come from VEC members who have opted to round their electric bills up to the next whole dollar. VEC Customers Share individual customer contributions average a little more than $5 per year, according to the news release.
