Hamilton County Commissioners just passed a resolution to allow residents to comment publicly about resolutions before the commission votes.

Although it didn't come without some push-back from Commissioners Greg Beck and Warren Mackey.

Mackey said U.S. Congress doesn't let the public speak on individual laws, so Hamilton County Commissioners shouldn't either.

Beck said passage of the resolution would allow commissioners to be "badgered" by residents. And it would give taxpayers"an opportunity for grandstanding."

Ultimately, the resolution passed after two failed attempts by Beck and Mackey to table or postpone the measure, and one amendment by Commissioner Marty Haynes to shorten the 10 minute per side time limit for issues.

The vote passed 7-2 with only Beck and Mackey in opposition.

In the same meeting, Mackey commented on passage of the resolution after hearing from the public over a controversial zoning change in Hixson.

"Chairman, if we pass that resolution about letting them speak, you see what's going to happen?" he said with a piece of paper covering his face.

In January, Beck made headlines when he said "the Sunshine Law stinks," in a public meeting.
