A grill was identified as the cause of a fire Monday night that sent two firefighters to the hospital, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department Tuesday.

Several apartment units were damaged in the blaze reported shortly before 7 p.m. at the Cloverdale Circle complex.

A resident of the Steeplechase Apartments in Hixson was grilling on a second-floor balcony when the grill caught fire and spread quickly to the roof and attic, an updated news release states.

Responding crews kept it form spreading to other buildings in the complex, officials state.

Both firefighters that were sent to the hospital with heat-related injuries have been released, and no residents were injured in the incident, the release states.

A dog did die in the fire though, and four-to-five families displaced.
